In August 2023, Melanin Moods CIC launched a ground-breaking monthly mental health program for Black men, designed to provide a safe and supportive space to discuss mental well-being in a familiar, culturally relevant setting—barbershops. This initiative seeks to normalise conversations around mental health, reduce stigma, and create a community of support among Black men. Each month, participants gather in barbershops to engage in open discussions, share experiences, and learn coping strategies for challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression.
The program aims to break down barriers to mental health care by offering a more informal, approachable alternative to traditional therapy, allowing men to open up in an environment they trust. Through group conversations, guest speakers, and interactive activities, Black men are encouraged to prioritise self-care and emotional wellness. The program also emphasises confidentiality, creating a space where men can talk freely and support one another.
The initiative strives to create long-term cultural shifts in how mental health is perceived within the community, providing a powerful platform for men to heal, grow, and connect.
